In January 2017, I had the opportunity to do a residency at the Banff Centre. I spent my time recording the sounds of nature around Banff, and recorded sounds that I made outdoors by improvising with my breath and the wind, drumming on ice, bowing trees, singing, and building ice instruments like the ice cello pictured here. I shaped these recordings into a piece called Winter Music. This piece is an electronic track that creates an environment for the performer(s) to improvise with. It has been performed by three very different performers, and is on India Gailey’s debut CD Lucid. You can hear the track alone, and a performance by Yong Clark below, and see the score here.
