Lagu Biola (2013) is loosely related to traditional Sundanese gamelan forms, but introduces the viola to the ensemble as a solo instrument. This piece was composed for, and performed by Sarah McCabe, and the Acadia Gamelan Ensemble led by Ken Shorley. Gamelan has been a really important part of my musical life. Its sounds and its conception of rhythm has found its way into my other compositions. I've been lucky enough to travel to Indonesia to listen to gamelan, and have worked with the wonderful Indonesian composer Ade Suparman.
