ecliptic was composed for the Aizuri Quartet, who will premiere it on March 24, 2020. I wrote a lot of this piece during my residency at the Banff Centre in January. During that time, I was thinking of solstice, the changing lengths of day and night, winter, and warmth. The piece is intimate, but spacious, and feels like something between a song and a ritual. It explores natural harmonics, and the undertone series that descend through the nodes of those harmonics.
Due to Covid-19, this piece will instead premiere in December 2020.

Tools for writing string harmonics. The Monome Grid is running a Max patch I wrote where each row plays the natural harmonics of a string from a violin or cello.
