Gamelan has been an important part of my musical education, and finds its way into my music in surprising ways. At Acadia University, I learned Sundanese gamelan from Ken Shorley for four years, and at the University of Cambridge I learned Javanese gamelan. I have also had the chance to work with Ade Suparman on two occasions, and to travel to Indonesia. In July 2016, I recorded an album with the Mindful Flower Gamelan at Acadia University. This upcoming album includes my piece Lagu Biola. You can watch an earlier performance of Lagu Biola here.
I also had the opportunity to collaborate with Ken to compose music for an original wayang kulit (shadow puppet) play called The Forest that was premiered by the Acadia Gamelan Ensemble in 2014 with puppets by Heidi Kalyani.
